Back in 2022, when Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS set out to create a new documentary series, Nick, Simon en Kees: The Beatles, they wanted to go beyond storytelling. They wanted to recreate history.
One of their key filming days brought them to Twickenham Film Studios, the iconic location where The Beatles originally shot their ‘Hey Jude’ video. For this pivotal scene, they needed a partner they could trust with a live audio recording that had to be flawless and completed in a single day.
That’s where SJARK came in.
For SJARK, this was a one-day on-site production, including setup, recording, and derig. From pre-production planning through to on-site execution, we worked closely with the Dutch production company, HEUS, to ensure they could focus on the creative, while we managed the technical delivery from end to end.

The documentary had a tight production window and a packed schedule. Twickenham Studios was booked for just one day, leaving no room for error. Our challenge was to deliver professional-grade live audio recording during a single-day shoot, while accommodating a full cast and crew - and an audience - on a working set.
Their vision required:
From our first consultation, we knew this wasn’t just about microphones and monitors. It was about understanding the story behind the scene, aligning with the production team’s creative vision, and ensuring our technical delivery elevated the final result.
We ensured both were experienced in working with international crews, and understood not only the technical requirements but shared the production values, expectations, and energy that come with broadcast television.
We started with a detailed planning phase to understand the tech specs of the band, the layout of the studio, and the post-production requirements of the documentary - even though we weren’t part of post ourselves. Regardless, it is important that we develop this understanding so as to integrate seamlessly into our clients workflow.
We took the time to explore authentic equipment options like vintage microphones and a grand piano to match the original Beatles shoot and support the clients vision, but worked collaboratively with the producers to find a smart and still contemporary compromise that stayed within budget while still delivering on tone and atmosphere.
All technical equipment and cable runs had to account for camera movement and a live audience on set, mirroring the iconic energy of the original video. We ran extensive pre-tests and rehearsals on-site, and held a creative walkthrough with producers before filming began.
And we made sure our team was well looked after throughout. Long event days mean high pressure, and we believe a supported, well-rested team creates a better production for everyone.
On the day of the shoot, our team kicked off early in Central London, traveling to Twickenham to meet the full production crew. After unloading and setup, we ran a full series of tests to ensure seamless audio.
As the production placed a strong emphasis on visuals, our audio setup was designed to complement rather than distract. We used minimal on-stage monitoring and carefully managed cable runs to maintain a clean, unobtrusive stage, ensuring nothing got in the way of the camera shots or audience experience.
Then came the fun part - working alongside the producers and camera team to bring the performance to life. With Nick, Simon, and Kees on stage and the cameras rolling, our setup captured every note cleanly and reliably.
Despite the tight turnaround, everything ran to schedule. The audio synced perfectly with the visual focus of the shoot - no disruptions, no technical delays.
After filming wrapped, our team conducted a smooth and safe de-rig before heading back to London.
The shoot was a success. The production team at HEUS was thrilled with how the day went, and our audio was used in the final televised episode of Nick, Simon en Kees: The Beatles - streamed to millions of viewers in the Netherlands and beyond.
